Erma C. Hummel, 84, of Hawarden, died Tuesday, October 17, in a care center in Hawarden after a long illness. Services were Friday, October 20, in the United Methodist Church, in Hawarden, with the Rev. Paul Hansen officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, in Akron.

Mrs. Hummel, the former Erma Clarabelle Waterbury, was born June 5, 1905, in Plymouth County, near Akron. She attended school in Akron and graduated from Akron High School in 1924. She attended Morningside College and taught school in rural Akron. On August 4, 1928, she married Clarence Hummel.

The couple lived near Westfield and then farmed in Union County, SD. In 1952 they moved to Akron and lived there until 1968 when they retired and moved to Hawarden. She was employed at Booth Drug, in Hawarden, for 18 years. Mr. Hummel died October 22, 1973. Mrs. Hummel was a member of United Methodist Church, in Hawarden, Vesper Chapter Order of Eastern Star, Roving Gardeners Club, of Akron, and Krafty Kats. She was a Past Worthy Matron of OES and past president of WSCS.

Survivors include two sons, Harlan, of Annandale, VA; and Donny, of Hawarden; a daughter, Mrs. Arnold (Kathleen) Swanson, of Waterloo; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
