Sioux County Capital May 1, 1941

Two suicides Wednesday brought shock to neighbors and relatives and friends and awakened the quiet of law enforcing offices in the county after several weeks of unusual quiet. Few thefts, no shooting and very little trouble has been reported to the county sheriff and coroner during the past month but yester day changed this.

At Alton Sheriff Dykstra and deputy Mc Gloghlon had but returned from Granville when they were summoned to Alton. There, Harry Linderngel, operator of the Mobil gas station next to Jess Allen's establishment, had locked his station, gone into the men's rest room, and shot himself through; the forehead with a 410 pistol. Only a small hole in the forehead was evident. The body was located just before noon when Mrs. Linderngel brought lunch for her husband. She found the door locked to the station and finding Dr. Murphy remarked that something might be wrong. Jess Allen was called and he gained entrance to the place through a back window.

Mr. Allen noticed blood on the floor under the rest room door and forced the door open. Mr. Lindernagels body had fallen against the door after the shot The fatal shot was not heard but people in the neighboring cafe thought they had heard a dull thump. Mr. Linderngel was 51 years of age and is survived by his wife and a married daughter.

The death was declared a suicide. No information was obtainable as to the reason for the death.Plans were not yet announced for funeral services for Mr. Lindernagel or Mr. Petz at the time of publication

(This seems a likely person as only one with a similar name in the area. The was a Harry Lindekugel born abt 1889 SD living in Remsen in 1940. Wife Anna. Don’t know if this is the correct person. The spelling of the last name seems to be in question in the 1930 Spencer SD census Harry B. Linderugel born South Dakota in 1889, wife Anna born 1887, daughter Iona 16. )
