From the Rock Valley Bee, January 1, 1915:

MRS. JOHN McELROY

After an illness of several weeks duration Mrs. John McElroy, for over twenty-five years a resident of Rock Valley and vicinity, passed away Sunday morning [December 27] at her home in this city.

The deceased was born in Imgan Keel county, South Ireland, Sept. 8, 1847, and was at the time of her death sixty-seven years, three months and nineteen days old. Her early life was spent in the land of her birth. After she grew to womanhood she came to this country and at Belle Plaine, New York, she was united in marriage to John McElroy in the year 1865. To this union were born ten children seven of whom are living and were at the bedside of their mother during her last illness.

In 1866 Mr. and Mrs. McElroy removed to Dixon, Ill., and three years later moved to Carroll, Ia., and from there came to Rock Valley vicinity, and have resided here continuously since that time. The deceased was highly respected by all who knew her. She was a kind, dutiful wife and a loving, faithful mother, and although her family realized that she could not recover, her death is, never-the-less, a great shock to them.

Funeral services were held from St. Mary's church in Rock Valley Tuesday morning conducted by Rev. Father O'Rielly. She is survived by her husband, John McElroy, and seven children, two daughters, Mrs. M. Johnson of Sioux City and Mrs. Kate Morrison of San Francisco, Cal., and five sons, Oney and James of Rock Valley, Joe and John of Sioux City and Charles of Cooper, Ia. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of many friends in their sorrow.
