From the Rock Valley Bee, March 6, 1914:

DEATH OF MRS. JOHN PATER

Mrs. John Pater died at her home in Rock Valley Friday morning [Feb. 27] after an illness of several weeks. The deceased was born in Barneveld, Netherlands, May 18, 1855, and was at the time of her death 58 years, 7 months and 9 days old. The greater part of her life was spent in her native land, Holland. With her family she came to this country in December 1901, coming directly to Sioux county where she had lived continuously until death claimed her.

The deceased was a good Christian woman and was well thought of in this vicinity, and her death was a great shock to her relatives and friends. She leaves to mourn five sons and four daughters all living in this vicinity, and four brothers and two sisters in the Netherlands.

Funeral services were held from the Christian Reformed church Monday afternoon conducted by Rev. Holwerda, pastor of this church. The services were largely attended by sympathizing friends. Interment was made in the Valley View Cemetery south of town.

From the Alton Democrat, March 7, 1914: Rock Valley news:

Friday of last week the home of John Pater, west of town, was sadly darkened by the visit of the Grim Reaper, who removed from their circle the beloved mother and wife of a loving family. Her death was due to diabetes and though it was known that her life was despaired of, it nevertheless was a great shock to beloved friends and relatives. The deceased was of advanced age and has done her duty to life's call, cheering those around her and helping when help was needed. She was a friend to everybody and will be greatly missed by those of the most intimate. Besides her husband she leaves several children to mourn her untimely departure. Funeral services were held from the Christian Reformed church, conducted by Rev. Holwerda, and she was laid to rest in Valley View cemetery. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved ones in their loss of an affectionate and loving mother and wife.
