Leo (Gene) Raynie
Leo Raynie, 59, of Yankton, longtime Yankton businessman, died suddenly Saturday, Jan. 16, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton. Services were held Tuesday, Jan. 19, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton with the Rev. James K. Schwartz and the Rev. David C. Evenson officiating. Burial was in the Garden of Memories at Yankton.

Mr. Raynie was born Sept. 25,1928, in Union County. He moved with his mother at the age of four to Hawarden, where he grew up and attended Hawarden Public Schools, graduating in 1947. He married Erdis A. Kock Feb. 8, 1951 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Coleridge, NE.

Mr. Raynie moved to Sioux City where he began his career working for Johnson Bakery. He moved back to Hawarden to work at Van's Bakery before returning to Sioux City to work at Kresege Bakery. In 1957, he purchased Van's Bakery in Hawarden, and operated the business until he transferred to Yankton in 1963 when he established Raynie Bakery. He sold the business in 1970 and worked for the Vander Meer Bakery in Yankton from 1970-74. He then worked for the South Dakota Human Service Center in their dietary department up until the time of his death.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton and was active in the South Dakota Boy Scouts program, serving as unit commissioner for the southern district. He received Scouter of the Year, District Award of Merit, and Scouting Family of the Year. He was a member of United Commercial Travelers.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Max (Deborah) Prabecek, of Brookings, SD, Mrs. Rodney (Rebecca) Pieper, of Yankton, SD; two sons, Douglas, of Provo, UT and Michael, at home; a sister, Mrs. James (Elnora) Whitaker, of Springdale, AR; and five grandchildren.
