From the Rock Valley Bee, February 13, 1914:

JACOB HIRSCHINGER

The subject of this sketch was born in the Province of Alsas[sic], Germany, February 5, 1832, and departed this life at Rock Valley February 6, 1914, aged 82 years and one day. When four years of age he came with his parents to this country and settled for a while in the state of Ohio. From there they went to Freeport, Ill., where they spent several years, removing from thence to Baraboo, Wis., where Mr. Herschinger grew to manhood. Here he was united in marriage to Miss Sallie Nippert who died a few years later. To this union were born three children, one of whom is living, Louis Hirschinger, a prominent business man of Milwaukee, Wis. He later married Miss Mary Klein, January 9, 1872, and this union was blessed with three children, two of whom survive. They are Mrs. Mabel Grossenberg and Mrs. Lydia Smith, both of Rock Valley.

Mr. Hirschinger came with his family to Rock Valley about twenty eight years ago and for many years followed the occupation of carpenter. As old age crept on he was obliged to give up the more active duties of life but he was ever known as an honest, industrious citizen. He took great delight in fixing up his home and surroundings so that they were not only convenient and comfortable but were also pleasing to the eye.

He was also a great lover of home and one of the pleasantest experiences of his last few months on earth was when his son Louis, together with his son and little babe were here on a visit a few weeks ago, the four generations had their picture taken. His last illness was of but two weeks duration and as its end approached the certainties of a bright and glorious immortality became more and more real to him.

He was a member of the German Methodist Church. The funeral services were held from the Methodist Church Monday afternoon conducted by the Rev. J. L. Shroyer assisted by Rev. H K. Hastings. Interment was made in Valley View cemetery. The bereaved widow and relatives have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their sorrow.
