Hawarden, Iowa ~ Carroll E. Winterfeld, 84, of Hawarden died following complications from a stroke on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the American Lutheran Church in Hawarden with Rev. Erma Wolf officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday, with the family present beginning at 5:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Carroll E. Winterfeld was born February 22, 1931 near Sioux Center, Iowa, the son of Theodor L. and Edna A. (Rehder) Winterfeld. He attended rural school in Garfield Township and graduated from the Sioux Center High School in 1948. Carroll married Betty C. Buffington on February 24, 1952 in Rock Valley, Iowa. They made their home southwest of Hudson, South Dakota.
Carroll served with the US Army beginning in December of 1952. On May 11, 1953 he began his tour in Korea, before his honorable discharge in 1954. Carroll was a farmer and also an auctioneer. He was a real estate broker for over 50 years. Carroll had a real passion for fishing.
They were members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ireton until 2002, at which time they moved into Hawarden and began their membership at the American Lutheran Church. Carroll was also a member of the Bergstrom Bodeen American Legion Post 128 of Hudson and the VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Betty; 4 children, Gayle (Randy) Webert of Yankton, South Dakota, David Winterfeld of Sioux City, Iowa, Michael (Rebecca) Winterfeld of Fremont, Nebraska, and Daniel Winterfeld of Jackson, Minnesota; 2 brothers, Merlyn (Doris) Winterfeld of Ogden, Iowa and Duane (Marlene) Winterfeld of Sioux Center, Iowa; sister, Marlene Wegner of Windom, Minnesota; brother-in-law, Raymond Fuller of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 2 sisters-in-law, Joann Winterfeld and Phyllis Winterfeld both of Ireton, Iowa; 3 grandchildren, Cami Barents, Ryan (Joyce) Barents and Erina Winterfeld; great-grandson, Brady Barents; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Carroll was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Julius and Edwin; brother-in-law, LaRue Wegner; and sister-in-law, Esther Fuller.
