Mr. Vernon Noteboom, age 85, of Orange City, passed away on Friday, October 9, 2015, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.
There will be a memorial service on Monday, October 12, at 2:30 p.m., at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. Pastor Mark Vande Zande will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. A family prayer service will be held on Monday, at 1:30 p.m. at the church.
Visitation with the family present will be on Sunday, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Vernon was born on June 24, 1930, at Orange City, the son of Arie C. and Lucy (De Jong) Noteboom. He was raised in the Orange City area, where he attended the Christian School and the Northwestern Classical Academy. He then served in the United States Army for two years, stationed in Kentucky and Japan.
On June 16, 1952, he married Bernice Gerritsen in Orange City. They made their home on a farm near Middleburg. Bernice passed away on October 23, 1962, at Orange City.
On December 3, 1963, he married Carol Bomgaars in Orange City. They continued to farm near Middleburg. In 1993, they retired into Orange City. He became a resident of Prairie Ridge in April of 2014.
Mr. Noteboom was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church, where he served as a deacon and an elder on the consistory. He also served on the boards of directors of the Orange City Christian School and the Unity Christian High School in Orange City. He was a trustee of Capel Township.
In addition to being a farmer, he was employed by the United States Post Office as a city and rural mail carrier.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, woodworking, and collecting antiques and guns. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of more than 51 years, Carol; seven children and their spouses, Verna and Dave Kiel, of Orange City; Glenda and Brad Vermeer, of Sioux Center; Jerry and Sue Noteboom, of Carmel (Rock Valley); Jeff and Kim Noteboom, of Orange City; Shirley and Karl Kaemingk, of Sioux Center; Brenda and Randy Vreugdenhil, of Sioux Center; and Bruce and Sheila Noteboom, of Orange City; 26 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Arie and MaryLou Noteboom; two sisters-in-law, Leona Noteboom and Joanne, and her husband, Jerry Niezen; three step-brothers, Harold Boonstra, Norman Boonstra, and his wife, Velma, and Rudy Boonstra; a step-sister, Mary Mouw, and a step-brother-in-law, Frank Vogel.
In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Noteboom, as a child; four brothers and a sister, Peter Ira, as an infant, Luetta Oolman, Peter Noteboom, Ronald Noteboom, and Thomas Noteboom; his step-mother, Ann (Boonstra) Noteboom; a step-brother, Robert Boonstra; and a step-sister, Lois Vogel.
Memorials will be directed to the Orange City Christian School, the Unity Christian High School, and the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.
