Huie, Mrs. M.S. 1872-1950

Last rites were held for Mrs. M. S. Huie Wednesday, February 15,
in the Methodist church, with Rev. M. L. Jones officiating.
Interment was made in the Valley View cemetery. Mrs. Huie died at
her home on February 13, 1950 after an illness of several years.

Survivors include her husband; M. S. Huie, and a son, Robert,: of
Sioux City. Mrs. Huie was born Jessie N. Hickox on October 17, 1872,
at Coon Rapids, Iowa; She attended school at Manchester, Iowa,
Cornell college and graduated in 1898 from Upper Iowa University with
a Bachelor of Science degree.

On August 1, 1899, she married Marshall S. Huie, at Lamnot Iowa. They
came to Rock Valley in 1901, where Mr. Huie was superintendent of
schools. Mrs. Huie served as principal of the high school
intermittently for several years. In 1924 she returned to Upper Iowa
University for her B. A. degree and upon her return here, again served
as principal of the high school until 1930. Mrs. Huie served as
secretary of the local chapter of the America Red Cross from the time
of its organization in 1917 until she was forced to resign because
of ill health in 1943. In 1919 she was elected to the school board,
the first woman to serve in that position in Rock Valley. In 1920 and
1921 she was president of the board. She was instrumental in the
organization of the public library and served as its first volunteer
librarian. She continued her work in the library as long as her
health permitted, resigning in 1948.
