Born: March 13, 1906
Died: 1964Lawrence N. Kemper, 57, former Hawarden businessman, a salesman out of Sioux City, was killed in a two-car crash three miles west of Volin, South Dakota Tuesday morning.
Mr. Kemper operated a men’s clothing store on Central Avenue formerly operated by Dinty Waite in the location just south of the Ben Franklin Store a number of years ago. He and Mrs. Kemper resided in an apartment at the rear of the store.
From here they moved to Sioux City and he sold men’s tailor made clothing over a wide territory in the four state area.
Floyd Stafford, about 80, retired farmer of Volin, and driver of the other car, was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota. He was termed in “serious” condition Tuesday night.
A car driven by Mr. Kemper was traveling west and collided at the intersection with the south-bound car driven by Mr. Stafford, according to Patrolman Maynard Gudahl. There is a stop sign on the north-south road.
The Kemper car went into a field in the southwest corner of the intersection after hitting the Stafford car and struck a telephone pole, breaking off the top of the pole. The Sioux City man who was thrown from his car when it hit the pole, apparently was killed instantly, the officer reported.
Mr. Kemper was born March 13, 1906, at Wentworth, South Dakota. He married Vera Ammons June 18, 1938, in Sioux City. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Sioux City.
Survivors include the widow; a son, Lawrence N. Jr., at home; his father, Frank Kemper of Madison, South Dakota; a brother, Walter of Rutland, South Dakota; and two sisters, Mrs. Viola Keith of Sioux Falls and Mrs. Mildred Williams of Stockton, California.
