Evelyn Whitehouse, 80, of Hawarden, died Tuesday, November 4, at the Hawarden Community Hospital.

Services were at 1:30 P.M. Thursday, November 6, at Associated Church in Hawarden with the Reverend Fredrich Melberg officiating. Burial was at Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden.

The former Evelyn Scott was born November 10, 1910, to Herbert Scott and Ida Crowther, in Union County, South Dakota. She graduated from Hawarden High School in 1928 and South Dakota State University at Brookings in 1932. She taught rural school for one year and home economics at Hawarden High School. She later served as home economical in Maryland for eight years and finally as home economist and assistant state leader with the University of Maryland at College Park.

She further advanced her study at Colorado State and University of Wisconsin and received a master’s degree from George Washington University. She married J. Lloyd Whitehouse in Maryland in December 1961. He died in April 1970 and she returned to Hawarden in September 1970.

She was a founding board member of the Hawarden Meals on Wheels and Senior Center. She was an active member of Associated Church and Mutual Improvement Club of Hawarden. She had served as Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star in 1936.

Survivors include two brothers, Paul Scott of Hudson, South Dakota and Wayne Scott of Hawarden ; three sisters, Dorothy Busch of Hawarden. Madeline Bird of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and Margaret Leafstedt of Hawarden; and many nieces and nephews.
