Jean Porter April 15, 1925 – April 28, 2006
Rock Valley - Marilyn Jean Porter 81, Rock Valley, died Friday, April 28, in Rock Valley. Services were Tuesday, May 2, at Pioneer United Methodist Church in Rock Valley, with the Rev. Jerry Robertson officiating. Burial was at Richland Cemetery in Inwood, under the direction of Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.Jean Porter, the ninth child of Albert and Anna Wendt Miller, was born April 15, 1925 in Newell. The family moved in 1927 to Omaha, NE, where she graduated from Central High school. She was working as a teller in a bank in Omaha, where she met Alvin Porter, who was working for Martin Aircraft Company. After they were married on Jan 20, 1945, they lived in Sioux City and Sioux Falls, SD before starting Porter Funeral Home and Porter Furniture in Inwood in 1955. They expanded the funeral business into Rock Valley in 1962. Mr. Porter died on Oct 4, 1982. She remained active in the business and many civic and church activities.
Survivors include a daughter, Pam Porter of Denver CO; two sons, Randy and Shirlee Porter of Rock Valley, and Ric and Cynthia Porter of Hawarden; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and in-laws, Dorothy Moen of Inwood , Mavis Porter of Rock Rapids, Don and Alice Clark of Alma KS and Fred and Ruth Tyler of Omaha, NE.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Porter; and siblings, Louis and Marth Miller, Ed and Mary Miller, Fred and Beryl Miller, Marie and John Wilson, Louise and Wesley Hinshaw, Ira and Mary Lou Miler, Genevieve and Howard Waterman, and Thelma Tyler.
