Irene M. Forslund, 98, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the Akron Care Center in Akron. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 3, 2009 at Union Creek Lutheran Church, rural Akron, Iowa. Pastor Carla Nelson will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be after 4:00 p.m. Friday, October 2, 2009, with the family present after 6:00 p.m., and a Prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa.

Irene M. Forslund was born August 4, 1911 in Hawarden, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Margaret (Schleuter) Carr. She attended school in Hawarden and Akron. She was united in marriage to Walfrid Forslund on June 8, 1935 in Elk Point, South Dakota. The couple farmed in Union County, South Dakota until retiring in 1967, when they moved to Akron.

Irene worked for various businesses in the area until going to work for the Akron Hospital and later the Akron Care Center in the Dietary Department. She worked until retiring at the age of 72.

Walfrid passed away August 8, 1993. Irene continued to live in Akron. In 1997, she became a resident of the Akron Care Center.

Irene was a member of Union Creek Lutheran Church, where she had served in the ladies aide for many years. She enjoyed playing in the Akron Care Center Bell Choir for several years. She also enjoyed fishing, gardening, and making crafts. She also enjoyed playing cards and games. She will always remembered for her baking and cooking. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her children: Jerry Forslund and his wife Linda of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Duane Forslund and his wife Carol of Hawarden, Iowa, Elaine Swift and her husband Buck of Akron, Iowa, and Nancy Rollinger of Minneapolis, Minnesota; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law: Kathryn Carr of Townsend, Montana, and Eleanor Carr of Bay Point, California; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 5 brothers: Clarence, Everett, Dan, Ray, and Leo; 5 sisters: Sadie Lowell, Agnes McNamara, Cecilia Karrer, Florence Hutmacher, and Alice Schlickemaer; a grandson: Brian Klemme; and 2 great grandchildren: Andrea Harvey and Baby Klemme.
