Hawarden Independent, January 26, 1967

Alfred Carter Thornton, 82 who grew to manhood on a farm northwest of Hawarden, died January 14, at Santa Ana, Calif. after suffering a stroke.

He was born December 16, 1884 in Perryburg, Ohio, the only child of Elmer E. & Lavinia Thornton, who moved to the farm near Hawarden when he was 2 years old.

Mr. Thornton was graduated from Morningside college and Grand Island Business college.

He married Martha Vinson of Elk Point, SD, June 15, 1910.

In 1911, Mr. Thornton joined the I.O.O.F. lodge in Hawarden and remained an active member until his final illness. He also had been an active member of the Methodist church, 58 years.

Surviving are the widow; two daughters, Florence Leinneweber of Oceanside, CA, and Vinnabel Burleson of Anaheim, CA.; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Myron.
