Hawarden Independent, February 7, 1929

Old Hawarden friends will learn with regret of the death of W. H. Wintersteen which occurred at his home at Highmore, S.D. on Jan. 28th, following a brief illness. Mr. Wintersteen was an early day resident of Calliope and Hawarden but left here with his family nearly thirty years ago. He was active in church and community affairs while here and served for a considerable length of time as a member of the Hawarden school board. The Highmore Herald contained the following mention of his death.

Mr. W. H. Wintersteen of this city was stricken with a hemorrhage of the brain the latter part of last week, and died on Monday evening about 9 o'clock.

He and wife moved to Highmore several years ago and since that time made their home in this city where they had a wide circle of friends. Mr. Wintersteen invested considerable money in Hyde county land and city property and continually had faith in its future.

William Harrison Wintersteen was born in Luzerne County, PA, on Feb. 9, 1852 and at the time of his death lacked 12 days of being 77 years old.

When a boy he moved with his parents to Jasper County, Iowa, where he lived until coming west in 1890.

On Oct. 28, 1875, he was united in marriage with Sarah M. Loran. Besides his wife he leaves three daughters; Mrs. R. E. Veall of Oakland, CA; Mrs. E. M. Everhart of Parker, SD; and Mrs. James McCarthy of San Diego, CA; one son, E. J. Wintersteen of Sioux Falls, SD; six granddaughters; two brothers, Henry J. of Hartford, SD and Thomas of Newton, IA; and five sisters, Mrs. Gilson of Ellis, SD; Mrs. Fuller of Madison; Mrs. Harding of Oklahoma City, OK; Mrs. Dunlap of Los Angeles, and Mrs. Murphy of Alpena, SD, besides a host of loyal friends.

E. J. Wintersteeen of Sioux Falls and Mrs. Everhart were here at the time of his death and although everything that loving hands and medical skill could do was done, he passed away very quietly and peacefully.

When a boy Mr. Wintersteen united with the Methodist church of which he had always been a faithful and loyal member. He was a man respected by all who knew him, a citizen of sterling qualities and was always thoughtful of the needs of others, and his counsel was practicable and dependable. His going is a serious loss to the community as well as to the church which he loved and supported by his presence, his counsel and his material means.

Short funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon and the remains were taken to Hartford, this state, yesterday morning where they were laid to rest.

Mr. Wintersteen was a faithful member of the Hirowkas, business men's club, of this city.

The entire community joins in extending sympathy to Mrs. Wintersteen and family.
