Myron O. Rhodes one of the pioneer residents of Hawarden, died at his apartments in this city about 11 o'clock Sunday evening. Death was due to senility. He had been in failing health for some times past though had not been bedfast and was up and around Sunday afternoon. Sunday evening he became quite ill and about 8 o'clock Peter Doctor, who occupied rooms in the same building, summoned a physician. Mr. Rhodes was found to be in a very weakened condition and death came just a few hours later. The remains were removed to Summers undertaking parlors where funeral services were conducted at 2:30 Wed. afternoon by Rev. Wm. F. Vance, pastor of the Associated Churches, and interment was made in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Myron Oscar Rhodes was born in Clymer Chautauqua county, N. Y.December 5, 1838 so he attained the ripe old age of 84 years, 5 months and 8 days. when 14 years of age he came to Jackson county, IA and after that made several trips back and forth to New York. He was a carpenter by trade and following the Civil War when the Union Pacific railroad was constructed west from Omaha to the Pacific coast, he followed along with the construction work and erected houses in towns along the route and made several trips to CA. and other points in the west. He came to Hawarden in 1883, the year after the original town was laid out, and for forty years this city has been his home. He has not engaged actively at his trade for a good many years although many Hawarden carpenters employed him to keep their saws properly filed as he was regarded as an expert in this line of work. He never married but kept bachelor quarters during most of the years of his residence here, although for a time he made his home with his sister, Mrs. C. B. Ross. Mrs. Ross moved to Casper, WY. a few years ago to be with her son and daughters and Mr. Rhodes was planning to leave this month for Casper to make his home there when he was overtaken by death. He had traveled extensively during his lifetime, was a wide reader and kept himself well informed on current topics. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. C. B. Ross of Casper, WY. who is now 82 years of age, the youngest of the family. Mrs. Ross and her daughter, Miss Marie Ross, arrived Tuesday evening from Casper to be present at the funeral. The sympathy of many old Hawarden friends is extended to the bereaved relatives.
