INSTANTLY KILLED IN SIOUX CITY SATURDAY NIGHT--SKULL FRACTURED WHEN HE PLUNGED DOWN STAIRWAY--FUNERAL HELD HERE WEDNESDAY

William Yates of Homer, Nebraska, son of Thomas Yates, Sr. of this city, was accidentally killed when he fell down the stairway in a Sioux City rooming house late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. His lifeless body was found at the foot of the stairway, lodged against the door, by another roomer when he attempted to enter the rooming house. His skull was fractured in the fall and apparently death had been almost instantaneous. There were no witnesses to the accident. Mr. Yates had gone from Homer, in company with another man, to spend the weekend and they engaged a room in the rooming house where the fatal accident occurred. At a coroner’s inquest following the finding of the body, it was determined that his death was purely accidental.

His father, Thomas Yates Sr., and brother, Thomas Yates Jr., went to Sioux City Sunday and the former accompanied the body to Hawarden Monday. Funeral services were held here Wednesday afternoon at the Associated Church, conducted by Reverend J.E. Bruner, pastor of the Baptist Church, and interment was made in Grace Hill Cemetery.

William Yates was born in Tama County, Iowa, January 27, 1872, so lacked but two months of being 55 years of age. He came to Sioux County with his parents when 9 years of age and grew to manhood on a farm north of Ireton, and has since spent the greater part of his life in the vicinity of Ireton and Hawarden, although at the time of his death he was making his home at Homer, Nebraska. He was united in marriage in 1898 with Lottie Warner. Six children were born to this union , four boys and two girls, Leonard, Vilas, Roscoe, Leslie, Beulah and Iris, all of whom survive. The two daughters made a home for him at Homer. He is also survived by his aged father, Thomas Yates, Sr. of Hawarden, and four brothers and three sisters, Charles of Sanborn, Iowa, James of Ireton, Ernest and Thomas of Hawarden, Mrs. Ellen Schuette, Mrs. Elizabeth Schutte, and Mrs. Sarah Hunsaker. Two of the sisters live in South Dakota and the other in Denver, Colorado.
