A son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman and Henrietta (Mielke) Witt, Sr., he was born May 16, 1871, in Chicago. When he was 5, he came to Iowa, locating in Plymouth County. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

He is survived by two sons, Alfred and Walter of Hawarden; one daughter, Mrs. Pete Moelier of Ireton; two brothers, Otto of Pipestone, Minnesota, and Fred of Hawarden; two sisters, Mrs. Edith Kemis of Spencer, Iowa, and Mrs. Anna Noteboom of Aberdeen, South Dakota; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

His wife and a daughter, Mrs. William (Mabel) Dierks, died three days apart in July of 1948. Three brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
