J. G. Benson Dies Here Tuesday
Former Farmer Near Hawarden, Hudson Dies Saturday in Hospital at Excelsior Springs, Mo. Funeral services for J. G. Benson, 69, who died Saturday in a hospital at Excelsior Springs, Mo., wore held at 2 oclock Tuesday afternoon in the Associated church. Rev. Theodore A. Mansen officiated at the church. Miss Lucille Johannsen and Hal Shoemaker with Mrs. Claus Lage as accompanist, sang two duets. Members of the Odd Fellows lodge had charge of the graveside rites at Hudson. Members of both the Odd Fellows and Rebekah lodges attended the services in a body. Pall bearers were Rex Truesdell, Frank Feikema, Lee Keehn, John Keehn, John Klumb and George Treiber.

Mr. Benson, in company with his wife, went to Excelsior Springs last February 17 with hopes to regain his health which had been failing for some time. When he became seriously ill some over a week before his death, his children went to Excelsior Springs to be with him.

For over a half century Mr. Benson lived in this community. In connection with his farming he was an extensive livestock feeder. Joseph Gottfrid Benson was born in Loftahamer, Sweden, June 19, 1878 where he grew to manhood and was confirmed in the Lutheran church in 1893. When 18 years of age he came to America and worked at various occupations until he took up farming near Hudson.

He married Miss Annie Tuynman at Rock Valley February 27, 1907 and they located on a farm seven miles south of Hudson. Here they lived until 1914 when they bought a farm northeast of Hawarden. In January, 1944, he retired and he and his wife came to Hawarden to make their home.

Survivors are his wife and five children, Mrs. Agnes Cable of Chamberlain, S. D., Mrs. Gladys Treiber of Alcester, Mrs. Hazel Nelson of Dallas, Texas, and Raymond Benson and Mrs. Lois Harker of Hawarden; one brother, Iver Benson of Huron, S. D.; two sisters, Mrs. Delia Torkelson of Hudson and Mrs. Beda Jacobson, who resides in Sweden, and 11 grandchildren.

Mr. Benson had planned to make a trip this year to Sweden to visit with relatives. Relatives who attended the funeral besides the children and grandchildren, were Mr. and Mrs. Iver Benson, Huron, S. D., Mrs. Delia Torkelson and Elmer, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Torkelson, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Gilbertson, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Burnham, and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Andrews Hudson, S. D., Mr. and Mrs. Waldimer Peterson, Hawarden, Mrs. Kate Hurdelbrink, Fairmont, North Dakota, Mrs. Nellie Hazlitt, Mr. and Mrs. Al Watke, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Harmer. and Mrs. George Lucas of Sioux Falls, Mrs. Margaret Coyer, Mrs. Harold De Vaul, and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Porter of Inwood, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Coyer of Fairview, S. D., Mr. and Mrs. Pete Tuynman, and Mr. and Mrs. Art Klein of Rock Valley, Iowa, and Mr. Reynold Tuynman, Madison, South Dakota.
