Died: April 30, 1991Catherine Helen Kratochvil, 85, of Hawarden died suddenly Tuesday, April 29, 1991, at a hospital in Hawarden.
Services were Friday, May 3, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hawarden, the Reverend Edmond Adams officiated. Burial was held at Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Mrs. Kratochvil, the former Catherine Scharfen, was born June 26, 1905, in Osmond, Nebraska, the daughter of Joe and Mary (Kaup) Scharfen. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School through the eighth grade. She married Ben Kratochvil February 1, 1927, in Osmond. The couple farmed in Nebraska until moving to South Dakota in 1931. They retired and moved to Hawarden in 1962. She was employed at Otis Radio of Hawarden for 23 years. He died April 11, 1978.
Mrs. Kratochvil was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Guild, the Nufu Card Club, Progressive Quilters, Golden Agers, Union County Extension Club and the Senior Citizens Group of Hawarden.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Duane and Marian of Glendale, Arizona, and Daryl and Hilda of Hawarden; four daughters, LouAnn and her husband, Tony Rummelhart of Denver, Colorado, Lavonne and her husband, Vince Hook of Hawarden, Pat and her husband, Gary Banta, of Riverton, Utah, and Virginia Sherlock of Lakewood, Colorado; a brother, Joe of San Francisco; two sisters, Rose Borland and Gertrude Finney, both of Lincoln, Nebraska; 29 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Royce Sherlock and a great-grandson, Andrew Hook.
