Died: December 17, 2001Barbara Hope Klay, 79, Orange City, died Monday, December 17, at Orange City Hospital.
Services were Thursday, December 20, at American Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Reverend Harlan Van Oort officiating. Burial was at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City, under the direction of Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Barbara Hope, daughter of Fletcher Simpson and Phyllis Marian (Phillips) Brown, was born December 8, 1922; in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She was raised in Des Moines, where she graduated from high school.
After working a few years, she attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, where she met Earl T. Klay.
They were married June 16, 1947, in Cedar Rapids. They made their home in Orange City, where she was a homemaker.
She also completed her bachelor of arts degree in English at Northwestern College in Orange City, graduating in 1969. Mr. Klay died June 23, 1997, in Orange City. She became a resident of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City in October 1999.
She was an active member of American Reformed Church in Orange City, where she participated in the women’s organizations. She was a faithful volunteer at both the church and local hospital.
Survivors include a son, Timothy Earl Klay of Boulder, Colorado; two daughters, Susan Hope and Leslie Victor Swalm Jr., of Belleville, New Jersey, and Rachel Ruth Klay of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two grandsons; and a sister-in-law, Edith King Brown of Magnolia Springs, Alabama.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Klay, and a brother, Philip David Brown.
Memorials may be directed to Hope Haven in Rock Valley.
