Harry Kennedy was drowned in the Big Sioux River, near W.W. Allen’s gravel pumping station, shortly after one o’clock Tuesday afternoon. In company with Carl Anderson he had gone down to the gravel pit to watch the workings of the plant in pumping gravel. The main pumping station is located upon a barge in the river on the South Dakota side and Harry decided to cross the river to the barge. His companion remained on the Iowa shore. Harry took off all his clothing except his underwear and waded across, the river not being very deep at this point. The engineer on the barge saw him cross the river and go out onto the sand bar, but did not see him again enter the water. After a short time Mr. Anderson called to the engineer to know what had become of Kennedy. As he was nowhere to be seen it was evident that he had entered the water and had had gone down. An emergency alarm was blown and the plant was shut down and all hands made every effort to locate the body. It was finally located about half way between the bank and the barge in about seven feet of water, and was at once removed to shore. In the meantime an alarm of the drowning had telephoned up town and Dr. C.E. Palmer reached the scene a few minutes after the body had been recovered. With the aid of those present he worked faithfully to restore life to the body , but all efforts were unavailing. His wife and little child were at Centerville, South Dakota, visiting relatives at the time the sad accident occurred.
The funeral was held at ten o’clock this morning at the Catholic Church, Reverend Father Bradley conducting the services.
Harry Kennedy was born in Calliope February 10, 1890. He was united in marriage December 23, 1911, to Miss Blanche Murray of Centerville. Besides his wife and child he leaves an aged father, two brothers and four sisters to mourn his unfortunate death.
The bereaved ones have the sincere sympathy of all in their time of sorrow.
