Donald John Ver Hoeven was born March 30, 1920 to Jacob and Klasina (De Koning) Ver Hoeven. Don was raised in the Ireton area with his brother and sisters, Loucella, Dorathy, Clarence, Tony, and Marvin. In November of 1942, Don left to serve our country during World War II. He served in the European Theater until the war ended in 1945.
Don married Marie De Groot on January 24, 1946 at Marie’s family home near Ireton, Iowa. Together they farmed first by Ireton then Brookings, SD until returning to Iowa in 1963 to the farm place northeast of Inwood, where they raised their five children, Janice, Sharon, Lyle, Marlene, and Darwin. Don was a very active dairy farmer until his retirement. Marie passed away on October 22, 2004. Don continued to live on the farm and enjoyed raising miniature horses and exotic birds, lending a hand with the remodel of the Inwood Community Center and any little jobs needing to be done on the farm. In March 2014, Don moved to Fellowship Village where he enjoyed watching the construction of the new addition and the kids playing outside for recess.
