Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, January 5, at 1:30 and 2 o'clock at the Methodist Church for Harold J. Long. Rev. Marvin Nelson was in charge. Mrs. Roger Smith was organist and Mrs. Edward De Haas, soloist.

Mr. Long died suddenly, Saturday, January 1 while he and Mrs. Long were in San Diego, Calif., visiting relatives.

Harold J. (Bill) Long was born October 9, 1898 at Sanborn and attended school at Sanborn and Rock Valley, graduating from the Rock Valley high school. He served in World War I.

On November 24, he was married to Marcella Anderson at Hudson. He operated a dairy for a number of years.

He was connected with the Federal Land Bank at the time of his appointment as postmaster in Rock Valley in 1936. He retired that position in the summer of 1965. He was an active member of the Pioneer Methodist church and of the American Legion.

He is survived by the widow, Marcella, four daughters, Mary Alice, Mrs. Marlowe O. Alsager of Birmingham, Mich.; Barbara, Mrs. Warren C. Anderson of Doon; Helen, Mrs. Murray Rowe of Canton, SD, and Sandra, Mrs. Charles Moeller, Jr. of Hastings, MN; one brother, Lester L. Long of Sun City, AZ; three sisters, Mrs. Cecil Smith and Mrs. Wm. B. Hansen of Rock Valley and Mrs. John Goldsmith of Southgate, CA, and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira & Alice Long, two brothers, Lloyd and Robert Long and a sister, Maude.

Pallbearers were members of the post office force, Paul Beumer, Roger Smith, Delmar DeBrein, George Timmer, Henry Bakker and Lee Schlecty. Mr. Schlecty is retired. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery here with Porter Funeral service in charge.
