From the Sioux County Index (Hull), August 2, 1951:

Obituary of the Late Mrs. Maria Wiese

Mrs. Maria Wiese, nee Haegele, passed to her eternal reward last Monday night, July 30th, after an illness of four weeks.

Her cradle stood in Boeckingen near Stuttgart in Southern Germany (July 6, 1863). Here she was also on the arms of her sponsors brought to baptism to be born again of water and the Spirit. In the rite of confirmation she renewed her baptismal vow and promise. In May 1882 she came to this country and settled in Hull. Throughout her life she took an active part in the work of her Lutheran church.

On September 23, 1882, she was married to Mr. Friedrich Wiese, one of the pioneers of this territory. To this union five children were born, one son, Friedrich preceded her in death in 1900. Crosses were not spared her, for she lost her husband in 1910. The next year she moved with her family to the town of Hull from the farm. A charter member of the Zion Lutheran Ladies' Aid she worked hard to serve her Master.

Keeping a clear mind to the end she passed away at the age of 88 years and 24 days, leaving to mourn her passing her four daughters: Elizabeth, Mrs. R. (Anna) Van Aken, Maria, and Emma J.; one grandson Robert Van Aken; one son-in-law Mr. Reyer Van Aken; one brother, Friedrich Haegele of Lester, Iowa; one sister, Miss Anna Haegele of New York; besides many other relatives and friends. May she rest in peace and the light of eternal life shine upon her.

Funeral services will be held Thursday (today) at 1:30 P.M. at the house and at 2:00 P.M. at the First Reformed Church.

From the Sioux County Index (Hull), August 9, 1951:

In Memory of Mrs. Maria Wiese

Mr. Maria Wiese, whose obituary appeared in last week's Index, was laid to rest Thursday afternoon, August 2nd, in the family lot in St. Paul's Cemetery northeast of Hull. The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. William Meinen in the First Reformed Church. As a neighbor and friend of the Wiese family, Rev. Wm. C. De Jong gave an impressive eulogy concluding with a beautiful Whittier poem. Mr. and Mrs. Willis Brouwer sang two duets with Miss Nella De Jong at the organ. Mr. Charles A. Beckman, an old friend of the family, assisted Mr. Dale Kraai. The pallbearers were Fred, Otto, Will and Elmer Haegele, nephews of Mrs. Wiese, and Kenneth and Wayne Faber.

Rlatives from Chicago, Illinois; Independence and Lester, Iowa; and friends from Iowa City, Dixon, Hawarden, Sioux City, Rock Rapids, Alvord, Doon and Rock Valley in attendance attested the love and esteem engendered in the hearts of all who knew Mrs. Wiese.

Mrs. Wiese was truly a pioneer woman. Coming to Sioux County in 1882, she started farming with her husband on the homestead northwest of Hull the same fall. Fred Wiese was one of the first successful cattle feeders in Lincoln Township and personally shipped many carloads of prize stock to Chicago markets. When the Sioux City and Northern Railroad was built across their farm in the early nineties there were complications and the Wiese farm was a mecca for transients and drifters as no one was ever turned away hungry. After her husband's passing in 1910, Mrs. Wiese and her four daughters moved to Hull where she continued to be active in church and community service. She will be acutely missed by all who knew her.

(Followed by a sentimental poem and a long list of out of town people who attended her funeral.)

(A briefer obit appeared in the Sioux Center News, August 9.)

(The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Wiese, Maria (Haegele), b. 6 Jul 1863 d. 30 Jul 1951 St Pauls Luth Cem Hull IA.)
