J. Harold Smith, 87, of Sacramento, California, formerly of Ireton, died Monday, November 6, 2006 in Roseville, California. Friends and family gathered on November 10, in Roseville, California and on November 11 in Sausalito, California, to commit his remains to the sea near Angel Island in San Francisco Bay. Donations may be made to Parkinson’s Disease research.

J. Harold Smith was born September 11, 1919 in Winfred, South Dakota, the son of John and Ida Smith. Harold graduated Ireton High class of ‘38, attended the School of Mines in South Dakota and later moved to Venice, California, to work at Douglas Aircraft. He married Marion Hedden of Hawarden, in 1942. After serving in the Navy during WWII, he returned with Marion to Ireton where he opened and operated Smith Electric Supply, eventually opened another branch in White, South Dakota, and Siouxland Supply in Hawarden. In 1959 Harold and Marion moved their family of six children to California where he established Smith Electric Supply. Harold enjoyed his work and continued working until he was 84.

He is survived by his wife Marion and his children J. Harold Jr., Douglas, Melanie Cook, Hilary Poisson, Dwight, and Stephanie Whitcomb, by 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren as well as by his brother Taylor and his sister Ila Sanderson.

Harold was preceded in death by his son-in-law Roger.
