Mr. Marion Menning, age 97, of Sheldon, formerly of Newkirk, passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at the Orange City Area Health System in Orange City.
There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, January 28, at 10:30am, at the Newkirk Reformed Church in rural Hospers. The Rev. David Powers will officiate. Interment will follow at the Newkirk Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Marion was born on July 31, 1917, in rural Hospers, the son of S. R. and Dena (Te Grotenhuis) Menning. He was raised at Newkirk, where he graduated from high school. He then served in the United States Navy and Marines, stationed at Camp Pendleton, California.
On December 25, 1944, he married Marjorie Winifred Reuvers in San Diego, California. They made their home in Newkirk, where he operated a portable feed grinder for eight years. He then served as custodian at the Newkirk center of the Floyd Valley Schools. In 2012, they moved to Sheldon.
Mr. Menning was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, where he served as an elder on the consistory, taught catechism classes, and participated in the Men’s Brotherhood. Also, he sang with the men’s chorus and the Senior Saints. During retirement, Marion and Marjorie did mission work in Alabama.
Survivors include his wife of more than seventy years; a daughter, Marilyn Menning, of Sheldon; a son, Marvin Menning, of Harwood, Maryland; two sisters and their husbands, Eunice and Ed Scholten and Arlene and Carroll Brown; three sisters-in-law, Christine Menning, Viola Menning, and Fannie Menning; a step-brother and his wife, Glen and Priscilla Salmon; his wife’s four siblings, and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, Virgil, and the Rev. Norman Menning; three sisters, Esther, and her husband, Ed Boone; Evelyn, and her husband, Sam Brink; and Sylvia Hornsby; and a brother-in-law, Dennis Raak.
