Died: October 14, 2007William “Bill” Reekers, 99, Sheldon, died Sunday, October 14, at Sanford Senior Care Sheldon.
Services was Wednesday, October 17, at United Methodist Church in Sheldon, with the Reverend Marvin Lindley officiating. Burial was at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, under the direction of Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.
Bill Reekers, son of Henry and Jane (Mouw) Reekers, was born August 18, 1908, in Sioux Center. When he was 2 years old, he moved with his family to a farm northeast of Sheldon. He received his education in Floyd Township country school until the eighth grade. After his schooling, he made his home with his sister and her husband and worked for his brother-in-law during the growing years. He also worked in harvesting in North Dakota and Minnesota before going to Detroit to work for General Motors. He married Helen Hosch on August 18, 19334, in Trenton, Missouri. They lived in Detroit for two years, later moving to a farm in the Hospers area. They farmed there for 13 years until moving to Denver, Colorado, where he worked in construction. They made their home there for 12 years before returning to Iowa to farm the family farm northeast of Sheldon. They resided there and he continued to help in the farming even in his retirement years.
He was a member of United Methodist Church in Sheldon and was on the building committee for the present church. He also was a member of Prairie Queen Kiwanis in Sheldon. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards, dancing and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Reekers of Sheldon; a daughter, Karen Peter of St. Charles, Missouri; a son, Merle and Susan Reekers of St. Louis; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
