Ed Recker, 98, Alton, died Sunday, April 1, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Services were Wednesday, April 4, at St. Mary’s Catholic School Gym in Alton, with the Reverend John Vakulskas officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery in Alton, under the direction of Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Ed Recker, son of Fred and Elizabeth (Pranger) Recker, was born July 25, 1908, in rural Faulkton, South Dakota. When a small child, he moved with his family to Orient, South Dakota, where he received his education.

During the depression, he moved to Iowa and worked for numerous farmers in the Alton area.

He married Gertrude Hansen on July 4, 1938, in Alton. They farmed near Remsen for several years, then moved to a farm near Alton. Mrs. Recker died April 1, 1975.

He retired in the spring of 1995. He had been a resident of Plymouth Manor Care Center since January 26, 2006.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Rosary Society.

Survivors include five daughters, Mary Lou Bauler of Le Mars, Colane Recker of Sioux City, Jeanette and George Curry of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Elaine Harriman of Laurens, and Gayle and Chuck Schmidt of Round Lake, Minnesota; two sons, Richard and Jean Recker of Le Mars, and Edward Jr. and Renae Recker of Alton; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Agnes “Tops” O’Drane of Lake Oswego, Oregon; and two sisters-in-law, Helen Recker of Paullina and Florentine Pickens of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Bonnie Recker in infancy, and Karen Recker; a granddaughter, Dawn Recker; a great-grandson, Andy Schumate; a son-in-law, Jim Harriman; four sisters; and three brothers.
