Gilbert J. Rensink, age 85, of Hospers, passed away on Sunday, July 8, 2007, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

There will be a memorial service on Thursday, July 12, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Milton Sikkema and the Rev. Harlan De Jong will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hospers Cemetery. There will be a prayer service on Thursday, at 9:30am, at the church.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Church. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.

Gilbert John was born on June 3, 1922, in rural Hospers, the son of Cornelius and Sena (Jurink) Rensink. He was raised at Newkirk, where he attended school. During World War II, he served in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in the Pacific Theatre.

On January 31, 1947, he married Kathryn Swets at the Hospers Christian Reformed Church. They farmed east of Hospers all their married life. In later years, they moved into Hospers, and more recently, the couple became residents of the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

Mr. Rensink was an active member of the First Reformed Church most of his adult life. He served on the consistory as a deacon and elder and also taught Sunday school classes.

He was also a member of the Reuter American Legion Post and served several terms on the board of directors of the Farmers Elevator, both in Hospers.

He enjoying gardening, fishing, and hunting and was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He looked forward to family gatherings will all of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of more than sixty years; six children, Carol, and her husband, Don Kohlstedt, of Wichita, Kansas; Glenda, and her husband, the Rev. Harlan De Jong, of Aplington; Judy, and her husband, Leon Rowenhorst, of Orange City; Robert Rensink, and his wife Karen, of Denver, Colordo; Laura, and her husband, Arlin Roskam, of Sioux Center; and Philip Rensink, of Hospers; seventeen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Henry and Daloris Rensink, of Hospers; and a sister and her husband, Berdella and Albert Heemstra, of Granville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Andrew Roskam.

Memorials may be directed to the church for missions.
