Clarence Mousel, 94, of Alton died Sunday, June 10, 2007, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, with Monsignor Roger Augustine and the Revs. John Vakulskas and James Tigges officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a St. Mary's Rosary Society rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Clarence was born August 17, 1912, in rural Alton, the son of Frank and Mary (Konz) Mousel. He was raised and educated in the Alton area. He then engaged in farming with his father.

On January 14, 1936, he married Viola Van Bergen in Granville, Iowa. They made their home near Alton, where they farmed. In 1949, they moved into Alton, where he continued to farm part-time and also worked as a carpenter for Tom De Jong Sr. Later, he was a painter for Gene Klein. After Gene's death, he became a self-employed painter. Viola died August 3, 1975.

On August 17, 1976, he married Genevieve Harriman in Alton. They made their home in Alton. She died July 25, 1994. He continued to live in his home until Sept. 15, 2006, when he entered Happy Siesta.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Alton and the Knights of Columbus of Granville, Iowa. He enjoyed spending his time hunting and fishing with his three sons. He also was a member of the Alton Archery Club.

Survivors include three sons, Dale and his wife, Clarice of Alton, Tom of Mesa, Ariz., and Gary and his wife, Donna of Le Mars, Iowa; two daughters and their husbands, Harriet and Floyd Fretz of Orange City, Iowa, and Annette and Robert Hall of Adrian, Mich.; a stepson, Jack Harriman of Salem, S.D.; two stepdaughter-in-law, Elaine Harriman of Laurens, Iowa, and Mary Getchell of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; numerous great-stepgrandchildren; a great-great-stepgranddaughter; and five sisters, Irene Pottebaum of Orange City, Iowa, Evelyn Ney of Granville, Iowa, Elvira Arens and Francie Mae Homan, both of Remsen, Iowa and Pearl Jenness of Cherokee, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Joseph in infancy and Milton; a stepson, Jim Harriman; a son-in-law, Larry Den Hartog; a granddaughter, Shelley Raneiri; two great-grandsons, Luke Mehrer and Jacob Brian Den Hartog; a sister, Darlene Streff; and three brothers, Arnold, Raymond and LeRoy.

Pallbearers will be Mitchell and Ben Feller, Michael and Joe Mehrer, Matt Mousel and Brian Erickson. Honorary pallbearers will be Brady Den Hartog, Morgan Mehrer, Lexie, Will and Sydney Erickson and Alexis and Zachary Mousel.
