Gertrude Leusink, 88, Orange City, died Wednesday, January 24, at Orange City Area Health System. Services were Saturday, January 27, at Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Reverend David Heilman officiating. Burial was at Capel Township Cemetery near Middleburg, under the direction of Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Gertrude Leusink, daughter of Albert and Hanna (TeSlaa) Meendering, was born May 3, 1918, in Hull, where she was raised and graduated from Western Christian High School. She attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she was employed in a factory.

She also attended Westmar College in Le Mars, and then served as a teacher. During World War II, she lived in Modesto, California, where she did housekeeping.

She married Morris Leusink on May 21, 1945, in Ripon, California. They made their home in Prosser, Washington, until 1951, when they moved to Orange City.

She was a homemaker and was employed in the bakeries for 20 years. She also worked at Pioneer Memorial Home for five years and at Hope Haven Residential Training Center, retiring at age 75. Mr. Leusink died June 18, 1978, in Orange City.

She was a member of Calvary Christian Reformed Church where she served as a secretary of the Harmony Circle, participated in Ladies’ Aid and attended Coffee Break.

When living in Washington, she belonged to Sunnyside Christian Reformed Church. She also was a member of the literary section of the Women’s Club.

She also enjoyed crocheting, doing counted cross stitch, gardening and reading, and very much appreciated the Orange City Public Library and its staff. She liked watching local sports, especially when her grandchildren were playing ball games, particularly soccer.

Survivors include a daughter, Helen and Lyle Ohler of Grand Rapids, Michigan; two sons, Gary and Wilma Leusink of Sibley, and Dale and Karen Leusink of Orange City; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, John and Margaret Meendering of Hull, and George and Ruth Meendering of Sioux Center; and a sister-in-law, Henrietta Meendering of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris Leusink; and a brother, Bernard Meendering.
