A Hospers man, Searle H. Jacobsma, 75, of Hospers, died Friday when the car he was driving struck a semi-trailer truck at an intersection near Rapid City, South Dakota, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

Jacobsma’s wife, Josephine Jacobsma, 75, was hospitalized in serious condition.

According to Highway Patrol investigators, the Jacobsma car ran a stop sign at the intersection and hit the truck, driven by Joel Naber, 41, of Primghar, Iowa. Naber was not injured.

Searle H. Jacobsma was born August 22, 1922 in Hospers, Iowa. He was the son of Horton and Ann (Vander Lee) Jacobsma. He had his schooling in the Hospers Christian School. On November 25, 1942 he was united in marriage to Josephine Peters at Hospers, Iowa. They farmed near Boyden until 1969 when they moved to Sioux City where he operated a trucking business. They moved to Hospers in 1990.

He was a member of the First Reformed Church of Hospers where he served as Elder. He was an active and enthusiastic member and supporter of the Sioux City Gospel Mission and the Gideons International.

He leaves to cherish their memories the following: his wife “Jo” and the following children and their spouses: Harlyn and wife Thresa of Orange City, Karen and her husband Garald Zommermaand of Rock Valley, Daryl and wife Debra of Larchwood, Don and wife Aletha of Lawton and Laurie and husband Dave Merritt of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Also the following brothers and sisters and their spouses: John and Char Jacobsma of Levelland, Texas; Freda and Bill Golden of Nebraska City, Nebraska; Arvin and Mary Jacobsma of Sioux City; Millie and Dave Hastings of Sierra Vista, Arizona and Hortense (Bud) and John Pratt of Bellflower, California. There are 15 Grandchildren and 18 Great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Sheryl Jo and a great-grandson, Joshua Jacobsma.

Memorial gifts will be given to the Gideons International.
