Loren D. Satterlee, resident of the Ireton Community for 90 years and Mortician of Ireton for some sixty years, died at the Hawarden Hospital Sunday noon following a week’s sickness. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 28 with a short service at the Satterlee Funeral home and at 2 P. M. with a memorial service at the Methodist church here.

Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Casket bearers include Carl Braaks, Robert Fritz, Arthur Bartlett, Gerrit Juffer, Fred Schuette and Andrew Mal.

Deceased was born on the homestead farm of his parents, 6 miles southeast of Ireton May 27, 1873 and spent his entire life in this area. He attended school in Le Mars at what is now Westmar College, and taught school. He taught a country school for one term and after that went into partnership with a young man in Hawarden who was a photographer. They also served the Alcester, South Dakota and Ireton community one day each week.

When he was 21, Mr. Satterlee moved to Ireton and opened a studio and was in this business several years. It was during this time met and married Hulda Klingsporn of Riceville, April 29, 1896 at Orange City. On April 29, 1961 Hulda and Loren celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with a family dinner.

Not completely satisfied with the photography business, Mr. Satterlee left that and took employment with a Mr. Fair, who owned the furniture and undertaking business in Ireton and later he became a licensed mortician. In time in partnership with an uncle, he purchased the business from Mr. Fair and some years later became sole owner.

Several years ago because of severe illness, Mr. Satterlee sold his furniture store but retained his funeral home and was assisted in his work by his son, Roland, also a licensed mortician. In 1960, after 54 years at his profession , Loren sold the funeral home to his son.

Surviving are two sons, Roland of Ireton and Wylie of Marcus; two daughters, Mrs. Fern Hooper of Richland, Washington and Mrs. Madge Montgomery of North Hollywood, California; two brothers; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
