JoHanna “Jo” Hofland, 77, Orange City, died Wednesday, June 11, at Orange City Hospital Long-Term Care Facility.

Services were Saturday, June 14, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Revs. Timothy Ouwinga and Dr. John Hulst officiating. Burial was at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City, under the direction of Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Jo Hofland, daughter of John and Anna (DeVries) Van Gelder, was born January 14, 1926, in Ireton. She moved to Orange City with her family at the age of 4. She attended Orange City Christian School, a Sioux County elementary school and Newkirk High School. She married James Hofland in February 1947 in Orange City. That marriage ended in 1970.

She worked at the Newkirk General Store and Vande Steeg’s Variety Store in Orange City. She was employed by K-Products in Orange City in later years.

She became a resident of Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City in September 1996. She transferred to the Orange City Hospital Long Term Care Facility in December 2001.

She was a member of First Christian Reformed Church, where she belonged to the Faith, Hope and Love Society, and participated in the Sunday School program. She enjoyed her grandchildren and spent special time with each one of them.

Survivors include two children, Mary and Milt Wissink of Orange City and Charles “Chuck“ and Anita Hofland of Hospers; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Jennie Schalekamp of Orange City, Margaret Reinders of Orange City, Agnes Van Gelder of Orange City, and Mary Vlieger of Chandler, MN; and three brothers, George Van Gelder of Colton, California, Randall Van Gelder of Orange City, and Kenneth Van Gelder of Ireton.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Van Gelder and Gerrit Van Gelder.
