IRETON -- Eva Ellen (Vande Pol) Zalme, 89, of Ireton, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, at the Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City, Neb., where she had lived the past seven months.

Eva Ellen Zalme was born March 6, 1916, to Dick and Etta (Eastman) Vande Pol on a farm between Sioux Center and Lebanon in Sioux County. She married Fred William Zalme of Alton, on Aug. 26, 1945, at Hawarden. They made their home in Ireton, where Eva was a seamstress and homemaker. She also baked for many years for the Ireton Caf? and wrote the Ireton news for the newspaper.

Eva loved all kinds of sewing, crocheting, embroidery, Swedish weaving, and all kinds of crafts. She had a large collection of dolls, several of which she had made. She loved flowers and always had plants inside and outside of her home. Her greatest enjoyment was family reunions and having family and friends visit. When her health permitted, she loved to go to senior dinners at the Ireton Senior Center.

Her husband Fred died Sept. 28, 1977.

Eva is survived by three children, Jeanette Etta and husband, George Wakeman of Ireton, Duane Arthur and wife, Diane Zalme of Mason, Ohio, and Charlotte Janis and husband, Loren Ferguson of South Sioux City, Neb.; nine grandchildren, George Wakeman and wife, Cynthia of Sioux City, Jeannie and husband, Joel Hagen of Scottsdale, Ariz., Renae and husband, Mike Hansen of Sioux City, Lonnie and wife, Ericka Berger of Sioux City, Corey Berger of Dakota City, Neb., Kristy and husband, Rod Carlson of Council Bluffs, Lori and husband, Bob Farris of Council Bluffs, Mark Zalme of Ireton and Jennifer Zalme of Mason, Ohio; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille and husband, Martin Huckle of Le Mars; and several nephews and nieces.

Eva was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and five brothers, Wayne, John, Louis, Arthur and Donald Vande Pol.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Ireton with the Rev. Tim Walker officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon today (Tuesday), with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 8:30 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Ireton.

Porter Funeral Home in Ireton was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include three children, Jeanette Etta Wakeman of Ireton, Duane Arthur Zalme of Mason, Ohio, and Charlotte Janis Ferguson of South Sioux City; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Huckle of LeMars; several nephews and nieces; and special friends, Daris, Sarah and Harold Westphal and Neva Van Donge all of Ireton. Eva was preceded in death by her husband; and five brothers, Wayne, John, Louis, Arthur and Donald Vande Pol.
