Died: January 24, 2010 Pella, Iowa

The Rev. Henry J. Vermeer, 96, of Pella went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, morning Jan. 24, while being cared for at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House.

Funeral services were Sat. at 11 a.m. at First Reformed Church, Hull. Committal services in the Hope Cemetery at Hull.

Vermeer was born March 1, 1913 in Sioux Center, the son of Jacob and Anna (Huitink) Vermeer. His formal education began in various schools in Sioux County, continuing at Northwestern Junior College in Orange City and Hope College in Holland, MI. He studied at Westminster Seminary in Philadelphia, PA. and graduated from Western Theological Seminary in Holland, MI. On August 10, 1939, he married Alberta Kooiker. They served churches in MI. Chicago, Wisc. CO. Pella and Hospers, where he retired in 1977. In retirement they lived in Hull; Bradenton, FLA; and Vriendshap village in Pella. He served on various boards of the RCA, Central College Board of Trustees and Northwestern College Board of Trustees.

He is survived by his two children and their spouses, Lorna and Mike Schrier of Montgomery, ALA. and Jim and Pam Vermeer of Pella; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Johanna (Harvey) Vermeer, Sioux Center; nieces and nephews; and loving friend and companion Valda Vander Waal of Pella.

He was preceded in death by Alberta, his wife of 65 years, on October 10, 2004; his sister, Dorothy and her husband George Addison; brother-in-law, Arthur Kooiker and his wife Billie; and a brother-in-law, Dr. Anthony Kooiker.

Memorials may be designated for the Rev. Henry J. and Alberta Vermeer Scholarship Fund at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, MI. and the Hospice of Pella Comfort House, or KCWN Christian radio station in Pella.
