L. W. Cox, a resident of this vicinity for more than 53 years, passed away at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Lutheran hospital in Sioux City, following an operation. Mr. Cox entered the hospital March 10th and the following day he submitted to a minor operation preparatory to a major operation. He seemed well on the road to recovery when his heart became affected and this caused his death.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at the home, five miles west of Hawarden, and later at the Big Springs Baptist church with Rev. B. L. Carlton in charge. Interment will be made at Big Springs.

Lewis W. Cox, the eldest son of Mrs. S. E. Cox, was born near Maquoketa, Iowa, Aug. 16, 1866, and passed away March 25, 1930, having attained the age of 63 years, 7 months and 9 days. He came to Sioux county with his parents about 53 years ago and they settled on a farm south of Ireton where they resided for six or seven years. The family moved onto the Cox farm in Union county, five miles west of Hawarden, where he lived until a short time before his marriage. He was united in marriage more than 38 years ago with Mary Lindgren and this union was blessed with four sons, one of whom preceded him in death, dying in infancy. After his marriage he located on a farm about a mile southeast of his home where he lived until his parents moved to Hawarden over twenty years ago when he bought the old home farm and since then has resided there. He united with the Baptist church of Big Springs a number of years ago and has been a faithful attendant. He is survived by his wife and three sons, Edgar, Clifford and Byron, who reside at home. He also leaves his aged mother, Mrs. S. E. Cox of Alcester, and four brothers, George of Hawarden; Harvey of Hecla, S. D.; Jesse of Alcester; and John of Harve, Mont.; and five sisters, Mrs. Rose Hilderbrand of Albany, Ore.; Mrs. John Edson of Alcester, Mrs. W. C. Newton and Mrs. Ernest Bancroft of Hawarden; and Mrs. P. J. Graham of Salix, Iowa. His father preceded him in death in 1918 and one brother Charles also preceded him in death.

Mr. Cox was among the most progressive and successful farmers of this vicinity and enjoyed the friendship, confidence and esteem of a wide circle of friends who learned of his death with deepest regret.
