Died: 1937

Gilford H. Ferris, a pioneer resident of Hudson, passed away at the home of his son, Lowell Ferris, at Las Cruces, New Mexico, on Wednesday, December 1st, from sleeping sickness. Mr. and Mrs. Ferris went to New Mexico last September with the intention of spending the winter there with their son and Mr. Ferris became ill shortly after they reached Las Cruces. It was believed at first that he had suffered a stroke but later the disease was diagnosed as sleeping sickness. He was removed to a hospital where he was cared for but later he returned to the home of his son where he passed away.

His remains arrived in Hawarden Saturday afternoon over the North Western railway and they were taken from here to Hudson. Mrs. Estella Ferris and her son, Lowell of Las Cruces, and her daughter, Mrs. Ethlyn Iverson of Sargeant Bluff and her other son, Virgil Ferris of Hudson, accompanied the remains here. Mrs. L.J. Cable of Rosebud, South Dakota, a sister of Mrs. Ferris, met them in Sioux City and came here with them. Mr. Ferris was 73 years old and had resided in Hudson for 60 years. He operated the Hunting elevator at Hudson for 28 years and was active in the affairs of the town. He was a member of the Congregational Church there.

He is survived by his wife and three children.
