Mrs. Grutrude Sas, 87, of Hull, passed away on Wednesdy, July 5, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, July 8, at 10:30 A.M., at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Verlyn Boone will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday, at 9:30 A.M., at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull, with the Rev. John Boender officiating.

Visitation will be after 4:00P.M. on Friday, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00P.M., at the funeral Home.

Gertrude Clazena was born on June 4, 1919, at Boyden, the daughter of John and Ella (Vander Pol) Vande Garde. At the age of 7, she moved to Sioux Center with her family. She attended the Sioux Center Community Schools and also a nurses’ training school in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She then served as a nurse at the Hull Hospital.

On January 21, 1947, she married John Sas in Sioux Center. They farmed northeast of Hull until 1980, when they moved into Hull. She was a homemaker, and the Sas family also operated the Boyden Drive-In for four years. Late in 2005, she became a resident of Pleasant Acres.

Mrs. Sas was a member of the First Reformed Church, the Sheridan Township Homemakers, the Farm Bureau Women, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed camping and fishing, tatting, crafts, word searches, baking, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years; two children and their spouses, Dwight and Marla Sas, of Hull; and Leanne and Verlyn Moen, of Marion; six grandchildren, Michael, Kevin, and Angie Sas; and Andrew, Mark, and Kasy Moen; a sister, Cornelia Broek, of Rock Valley; a brother and his wife, Glenn and Normaleen Vande Garde, of Kadoka, South Dakota; and a sister-in-law, Elvina Sas, of Rock Valley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, LeLand Dale; and a brother-in-law, Dave Broek.
