Born: June 1, 1852
Died:1922

George Washington Green, one if the pioneer settlers of Big Springs township and a resident of Union County, South Dakota, for nearly 62 years, died at 10 o’clock last Friday morning at his home at Long Beach, California. He had been bedfast but a few days although he had been in failing health for a number of years. Upon receipt of the news of his death his son, Harry H. Green, departed last Friday night for Long Beach. The remains will be brought back to Alcester for burial but the date of the arrival of the funeral party is unknown at this time.

George Washington Green was born in Wisconsin June 1, 1852, so would have been 70 years of age next June. He came with his parents to Elk Point when only 8 years of age where his boyhood was spent. When 18 years of age he pre-empted a quarter section in Big Springs township, filing it as a homestead when he attained his majority. In 1873 he was united in marriage with Miss Anna Paine at Elk Point and they moved at once onto the homestead where they lived for about twenty-five years when they moved to Alcester.
They continued to make their home at Alcester until about two years ago when Mr. Green’s health made it imperative for him to seek a less rigorous climate and they moved to Long Beach. They had previously spent several winters in California, however.

Three sons were born to them, the oldest dying in infancy. The others are Horace of Long Beach, and Harry H., who resides on the old homestead in Big Springs township, southwest of Hawarden. Besides the sons and aged widow, Anna, he also leaves three brothers and two sisters, Jas. S. Green of Hawarden, Raphael Green of Elk Point, who resides on the original homestead of the Green family, Shelton Green of Long Beach, California, Mrs. Jennie Skafe of Frederic, Wisconsin, and Edith Eslick of Elk Point.

Thus another of the sturdy pioneers of this section has been called to his reward. Those who knew “Wash” Green, as he was familiarly known, admired his sterling integrity and his sense of honor. He was a man of powerful physique which served to accentuate his rugged honesty. His passing will be mourned by many outside the family circle.
