Winslow Gergen, 96, died Friday, July 16, 2004 at the Bethesda Home at Webster, SD. A graveside service for Winslow Gergen will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 22,2004 at Grace Hill Cemetery of Hawarden, with the Rev. Father LeRoy Suntjenn: officiating. Military Honors will be presented by American Legion Post #254 Two Oakes and V.F.W. Post #2526 of Hawarden.

Winslow C. Gergen was born Sept. 15, 1907 in Chicago, IL., the son ofJohn and Louise (Lucius) Gergen. As a youngster, he grew up there and attendedschool in Chicago. After completing his education, he worked for a period of time in the iron mills. In the 1930's, Winslow moved to Iowa.

He married Dorothy Marie Hines in 1938 at Hawarden. They made their home in Hawarden, and owned and operated a produce business. They continued the produce business until 1942, when Winslow served in the U.S. Army during WW
II. After his discharge in 1945, they returned to Hawarden, and again operated the produce business until the late 1950's. At that time, they assumed ownership of a pool hall in Hawarden, and operated that for a couple of years before moving to Phoenix, Arizona in 1961.

In Phoenix, Winslow worked as a custodian for the Phoenix Public School system until retiring. They continued to make their home in Phoenix until their failing health made it desirable for them to live near family. In 1994 they moved to Webster, and made their home in the Bethesda Town Square apartments.Mrs. Gergen died on March 18,1997, and Winslow continued to make his home in Webster. He was a long-time member of Post #254 Two Oakes AmericanLegion Post of Hawarden. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden, and active in the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include a sister, Cardula Henderson of Columbia, Ohio, and cousins: Junior Pereboom of Webster, Les Pereboom of Sioux Falls, Ryllis Phillips of Sisseton, and John Powells of Madison, Wis. He was preceded in death by his wife, three brothers and one sister.
