Mrs. Cynthia Graves, a resident of Hawarden for the last 35 years, passed away suddenly at her home about 2 o’clock Sunday morning following a heart attack. Mrs. Graves had asked one of her sons to build a fire, he turned around to speak to her, but discovered that his mother had passed away.

Funeral services were held at the Barnard Funeral Home at 2 o’clock on Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. Clarence W. Hanscom officiating. Burial was in the Alcester Cemetery.

Cynthia Jane Smith, daughter of Maurice D. and Phoebe Ann Smith, was born in Green county, Wisconsin, March 2, 1864. Later she moved to Nebraska, where she taught school for a time. She was united in marriage with Adelbert Graves at Ord, Nebraska, November 16, 1887. After her marriage she moved to Michigan. About 35 years ago the family came to Hawarden and she lived here continuously since that time. Mr. Graves passed away October 28, 1930.

She is survived by six children, four daughters and two sons. They are Mrs. Hazel Funk of Sioux City; Mrs. Marion Harry of Hawarden; Mrs. H. A. Chase of Sioux Falls; Mrs. Harry Rust of Seattle, Washington; and Neil and Lyle Graves at home. All of the children were present for the funeral, except Mrs. Harry Rust. She also leaves three sisters and a brother, Mrs. Annie Job of Toppenish, Washington; Mrs. Florence Chapman of San Diego, California; Miss Phoebe Mae Smith of Portland, Oregon, and Ed Smith of Alton, Illinois.

While Mrs. Smith had been in failing health for the past ten years, she continued to look after her household duties. She was able to be down town Saturday so her death came as a shock to the members of the family.
