Sam Halma, 73, of Inwood, died peacefully at his home, Wednesday, June 7, 2006, following a 4 year battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 11 A.M. Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, in Inwood. Burial at Richardland Cemetery. Pastor John Wolf will be officiating. Visitation with the family will be 4 – 6 P.M. Sunday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Porter Funeral Home of Inwood in charge of arrangements.

Samuel Halma was born June 22, 1932 near Rock Valley, son of Harry and Hilda (Miedema) Halma. The family moved southwest of Inwood in 1944. Sam served in the U.S. Army as a liason officer in the 4th Regimental Combat team at Fairbanks, Arkansas 1952-4. Sam married Judith Bauder on June 19, 1959 at Peace Lutheran Church rural Sioux Center, Iowa. Together they farmed near Inwood before Sam and his brother George operated Inwood Lumber. Sam later started Halma Home Improvements business in Inwood. Sam loved many outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, boating, and gardening. He also enjoyed restoring and collecting a variety of guns. Sam was young at heart and was often seen playing with children at family gatherings. He loved to visit and made new acquaintances wherever he went.

Sam is survived by his wife, Judy; daughter, Rosalyn (Jay) Wielenga of Orange City, Iowa; a son, Brian (Laura) Halma of Sioux City, Iowa; 5 grandchildren, Aaron, and Leah Wielenga, Elizabeth, Alexis, and Benjamin Halma; brothers, George (Anna) Halma, Charles (Alice) Halma, Martin (Ruth) Halma, John Halma, Roger (June) Halma, and Clarence (Connie) Halma all of Inwood; sisters, Frieda (Bert) Veldkamp of Lakewood, California, and Albertha Johnson of Alcester, South Dakota, and Rena (Don) Cannegieter of Rock Valley, Iowa.

Sam was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Rhonda Jane; his parents; sister-in-law, Ella Mae Halma; brothers-in-law, Lawrence Gorter and Russell Johnson
