John Garmatz, 80, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005 due to an automobile accident. Memorial service was held Oct. 18 at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Todd Bunge officiating. Porter Funeral Home is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Denver Lutheran High School: 3201 W. Arizona Ave., Denver, CO 80210.

John Garmatz was born Jan. 12, 1925 the son of John and Elizabeth (De Vries) Garmatz in Verdi, Minn. He was raised and lived in Colorado for nearly sixty years. John was united in marriage to Sydney Alexander on June 10, 1946 in Washington, D.C. Together they lived in Denver, until moving to Albert Lea, Minn, in 1981 and then moving to Hawarden in 1984. Sydney died June 13,1992. John's energy and zest for life was always apparent and was these reason for his success in the sheep industry here in Colorado and the Midwest.

He is survived by four children Jay Garmatz of Denver, Vicki Crowell of Golden, Colo., Jim Garmatz of Mesquite, and Joe Garmatz of Denver; six grandchildren; a brother, Robert Garmatz of St. Louis, Mo.; two sisters, Norma Meyer of Seward, Neb., and Joanne Becke of Minnesota; land dear friend, Kay Richardson and her sons: Joe, Jesse and Jordan all of Hawarden. He was preceded in death by his wife Sydney.
