Died: July 5, 2005 Hawarden, Iowa

Walter Zigtema, 93, of Orange City died Tues. July 5 at the Hillcrest Health Care Service in Hawarden.

Funeral service was Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of First Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. David Ter Beest officiating. Interment was at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.

Zigtema was born July 16, 1911, in Roseland, Chicago, Ill. the son of Henry and Jessie (Post) Zigtema. As a young child, his family moved to Wichert, Ill. About 1920, they moved to Orange City, where he completed the eighth grade in scshool. As a young adult, he operated a shoe repair shop in Maurice. He also repaired shoes for a shop in Sioux Center. For most of his adult life, he resided in institutions in Iowa. Since Jan. 25, 1978 he had been a resident of Hillcrest Health Care Service in Hawarden.

He was a member of the First Reformed Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Tena Vogelzang of Rock Valley; and Harriett and her husband Ed Roos of Harlan; a brother, Raymond Zigtema and his wife Blanche of White House, TX; and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Barney and Sam Zigtema; and three sisters, Dorthea Rozeboom, Tillie Roghair and Sadie Roghair.

Memorials will be directed to the Hillcrest Health Care Service.
