Hawarden Independent, March 19, 1936

Raymond G. Goettsch, well known Eagle township farmer, passed away at his home, eleven miles northeast of Hawarden, at 4:30 last Thursday afternoon following a ten days' illness from pneumonia. Few outside his immediate family circle were aware of the seriousness of his illness and news of his death came as a distinct shock to his many friends in this community.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at the Ross Funeral Home and at 2 o'clock at Trinity Lutheran church with the pastor, Rev. George Steinkamp, in charge. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery. Members of the American Legion attended the service in a body and Legionaires served as pall bearers and the firing squad in uniform fired the soldier's salute to the dead and taps were sounded before the flag draped casket was lowered to the grave. A large concourse of relatives and friends attended the funeral service and the church was entirely inadequate to accommodate all those seeking admission.

Raymond G. Goettsch was born at Holstein, IA< Nov. 2, 1894, and died March 12, 1936 at the age of 41 years, 4 months and 10 days. When he was a small child his parents moved to Minnesota and after several moves finally located at Canby, in that state, where Ray grew to young manhood. Soon after the outbreak of the World War he entered the service of his country as a soldier and for eighteen months was stationed at Camp Chase, near Chillicothe, Ohio. He came to Hawarden after his discharge from the army and on Oct. 22, 1919, was united in marriage with Miss Sophie Bultman of this city. Following there marriage the young couple lived for several years on the George Bultman farm, at the southwest edge of Hawarden. Later they moved to a farm five miles southeast of Hawarden where they lied until nine years ago when they moved to the present home in Eagle township.

Mr. Goettsch became a member of Trinity Lutheran church in Hawarden on April 15, 1923, when he was baptized and confirmed. At the last annual meeting of Trinity church he was elected treasurer of the congregation and proved himself a conscientious and efficient servant in this important place now left vacant by his death. He also took an active interest in civic affairs and served his township in the capacity of assessor. He was a member of the American Legion and in all these posts of duty, as well as in the capacity of friend and neighbor, he will be remembered for giving of himself in loyal, unselfish and cheerful service.

His faithful wife and four children, Harold, Aged 15, Viola, aged 13, Luella, aged 10 and Duane, aged 4, mourn the loss of a loving husband and father. He also leaves his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Rudolph Goettsch of Canby, MN, and two brothers, Roland and Raleigh, who will miss their beloved son and brother. In addition a large number of other relatives and a host of friends are saddened by the blow which the hand of death has again inflicted.

NOTE: Long list of relatives and friends omitted.
