Hawarden Independent, September 13, 1928

Mrs. John L. Gorman of Huron, SD, passed away at 10:30 Sunday night at St. Vincent's hospital in Sioux City where she had been a patient most of the past summer. She had suffered from heart trouble for the past four years and early this summer she was removed to St. Vincent's hospital and her sister, Miss Margaret Schmitz, a trained nurse, cared for her. After she had been in the hospital about eight weeks she returned to the home of her parents in Hawarden for a time but when her condition did not improve she again entered the hospital. During her long illness everything that loving hands and medical skill could so was done for her but she grew weaker gradually until death claimed her.

The remains were brought to Hawarden Monday morning overland and funeral services were held at St. Mary's church at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning with Rev. Fr. C. P. Conway in charge. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery.

Elizabeth Ann Schmitz was born Aug. 9, 1892 at Mary Hill, Iowa, and passed away Sept. 9, 1928, at the age of 36 years and 1 month. When a child she moved with her parents to Sanborn and later to Sutherland. At the age of 16 years she came to Hawarden with her parents and she made her home here until her marriage. She was united in marriage with John L. Gorman, Nov. 14, 1917, and to this union were born two children. After her marriage she moved to Huron, SD, where she resided until her husband was called into the service during the World War when she again made her home in Hawarden. Later she again moved to Huron with her husband. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church in Hawarden. She was a faithful wife and devoted mother and her passing will be keenly felt by her husband and two children, who have been bereft of a mother's loving care at a tender age.

Besides her husband and two children, John Patrick, aged 8 years, and Catherine Elizabeth, aged 6 years, she is survived by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Schmitz, one sister, Miss Margaret Schmitz, and three brothers, William & John Schmitz of Chicago and Lewis Schmitz of Hawarden. Sincere sympathy is extended to the loved ones in their hour of sorrow.
