From the Sioux County Bee, August 26, 1898:

A Peculiar Case.
A couple of weeks ago the twelve year old son of Jack Murphy at Hull was taken with a difficulty in breathing. All the medical assistance of Hull was secured but availed nothing. The boy was taken to Sheldon but nothing could be done to relieve him at that place. None of the doctors seemed to know what was the trouble. Finally last Thursday the parents took the lad to Mitchell, South Dakota to be examined under an Xrays machine. It there developed that there was a tumor in his throat which could not be removed by medicine or operation. Sadly the parents and child started home but when they had proceeded as far as Marion Junction, the boy began to grow worse and the party there took the train for home, the trip thus far having been made overland. However the change did not improve conditions any and near Lennox the train stopped for the child to die. Undertakers met the train at Hull and the body was taken to the home of the parents. The funeral was held Tuesday. The Bee joins with the friends of the family in extending sympathy to the bereaved ones.

From the Hull Index, August 26, 1898:

Jimmie Murphy, the twelve year old lad of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Murphy, died Tuesday, enroute from Lenox, S.D. The remains were brought home on the same train. For about two months past he has been suffering from an obstruction growing on the bronchial tube which gave rise to the belief that he had asthmatic trouble. Physicians had been consulted at home, at Sheldon and LeMars, all of whom were of the same mind.

The child continued to grow worse until it was decided to take him to Mitchell, S. Dak., to consult a physician who was prepared with the x rays to locate and determine the cause of his ailment. On Friday last the parents started by carriage because the boy could not possibly travel by rail for fear of suffocation. Upon examination the discovery was made that a large tumor was grown over the air passage to his lungs. Medicine was prescribed with the hope that he might find relief and ultimately recover. On their return trip it was decided to leave their team at Marion Junction and return home as soon as possible as the child seemed o be growing rapidly worse. The party took the train, with hearts burdened with the sad thought that the chances of reaching home with him alive were indeed meager. The little fellow's suffering was over at Lenox. The sorrowing parents wired friends to meet them at the train.

The boy was a bright little fellow and a comfort to the household. They did all they could to restore him to health but without avail. The entire community will deeply sympathize with the bereaved father and mother. The funeral was held yesterday at 10:00 o'clock from the Catholic church, the remains being laid to rest in the church yard.
