CAFE OWNER SUCCUMBS TO LONG ILLNESS
H. M. Handy Died at Hospital Last Thursday Night
Operated Restaurant in Hawarden for Thirty Years; Funeral Services Were Held Tuesday

H. M. Handy, a business man in Hawarden for over 30 years, passed away shortly before 10 o'clock last Thursday evening at the Hawarden hospital. Mr. Handy had not been in good health for several months, and early in June he submitted to a major operation at the University hospital in Iowa City. At that time it was discovered that his condition was serious. He entered the Hawarden hospital about twelve days preceding his death in order that he might receive the best of care.

Funeral services were held at the Barnard Funeral home at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. C. W. Hanscom officiating. Mrs. Jake Lankhorst, with Mrs. Keaven Kane as accompanist, sang. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery. The business places were closed during the services.

Homer Marvin Handy, son of Homer Marvin and Ann M. Handy, was born in Mount Hope, Wis., Oct. 12, 1870, and passed away in Hawarden on July 8, 1943, having attained the age of 72 years, 9 months and 6 days. He came west with his parents in the early 70's and located at Rock Rapids. Later he moved to Rock Valley where he engaged in the hotel business. He was united in marriage with Minnie Silver Lee on June 16, 1897. Four children were born to this union, all of whom survive him. His wife preceded him in death five years ago.

He came to Hawarden in October, 1912, and engaged in the restaurant business and continued in it until death claimed him. For many years Ted's restaurant was one of the well known eating houses here, and was famous for its steaks.

The children are Mrs. Nina Haines of Hawarden; 1st Sgt. Ted Handy of Camp Bowie, Texas; Arthur Jackson Handy, Phm. 2/c, of Destroyer Base, San Diego, Calif., and Frederick Marvin Handy of Los Angeles, Calif. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Kate Shaw of Barrel, Mont.; Mrs. Minnie Curtis of St. Paul, Minn., and Mrs. Nancy Gemmill of Des Moines. There are also eleven grandchildren.

His three sons came to attend the funeral. Other relatives and friends from our of town who were here for the services were Mrs. Minnie Curtis and Mrs. A. B. Williams of St. Paul, Mrs. Nancy Gemmill of Des Moines, and Mr. and Mrs. Matt Agnes of Fort Dodge.
